Planting vegetables on train stations
The Incredible Edible Network is a movement started in Todmorden, north of Manchester in 2008 and is now spreading all around the World, including in Spain, where there are projects in Barcelona, Andalucia, Madrid and the North of Spain. The idea is by refocusing on food, communities can come together to help address some of the core issues that are facing our World today. Projects include: - planting community areas with vegetables and fruit trees, the food being available for anyone to pick. Vegetables and herb gardens have been planted on train stations, on university campuses and outside police stations, to name a few. - establishing vegetable patches and chicken coops in schools which are tended by the children to teach sustainability and a greater connection to nature. The food is then harvested and used directly for preparing school dinners. - encouraging local growing and cultivating, the local economy and education projects To find out more about the incredible edible movement, you can go to the Incredible Edible Network website or the Todmorden site, the first Incredible Edible community: http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/home If you are looking for an Alexander Technique (Técnica Alexander) teacher in the region, there is an English speaking teacher in Murcia. As far as I know she is the only teacher in the region and I really enjoy my lessons with her. Her name is Nuria Vera. She speaks fluent English and graduated as an Alexander teacher in 2002 from a school in Amsterdam. The classes last 45 minutes and cost 35 Euros. They take place in the southern part of Murcia city. To contact her you can ring her on (0034) 667 849 089. There are number of associations now in the region where you can hire a patch of land to grow your own vegetables. There are facilities to put watering in place and sometimes there are tools you can share as part of the association.
Huertoyou.com is close to Mar Menor Golf Resort and Roda Golf Resort. If you are looking for something more immersed in nature then the association Fuente Columbares ( http://fuentecolumbares.org/ ) is set in the El Valle and Carrascoy nature reserve and is beautiful. As a member you can also use the facilities such as the swimming pools, camping area, kitchen and go on the courses they run on organic farming and ecology. They have a number of different vegetable patches for hire and can advise on how to get started.
The region of Murcia has a site promoting organic products in the region and it provides extensive lists of outlets for organic produce. The site is http://biorganicfoods.com/ Most of it is in Spanish, but you can always translate the pages with Google translate. This week on the homepage there is a short video from Casa Blancas for learning names of some vegetables in English and Spanish. A very useful part of the site is at the top. If you click on 'Directorio Empresas' along the very top menu bar and then click on 'Búsqueda por producto', a list of all the organic produce with little photos comes up. If you then click on the food you are interested in, for example, ´Frutas ecológicas frescas´, (fresh organic fruit), it comes up with a list of the places and associations you can buy it from in different areas. This way you can find providers really close to you. Thank you biorganic! Welcome to the Organic Murcia Blog. This blog is designed for people interested in organic products in the Costa Cálida area of Spain. If you have any information you wish to share about productos ecológicos in the area, it would be great to hear from you.
